HUMAN TRADITIONS OR GOD'S INSTRUCTIONS?

I seldom see or hear that God's ways and thoughts are in sync with that of man's. They just contradicts each other.

Do you know why?

That's because of the fleshly, natural tendency of man and he will always want to satisfy it. Scripture reveals, "For the flesh lust against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh and these are CONTRARY to each other..." (Galatians 5:17).

Man's ways and God's ways are just different because the heart of man is desperately wicked and out of its abundance the mouth speaks. That's another prove.

This is only an exception to those who are recreated in their spirit man and has allowed their entire being to be influenced by the Holy Spirit including their heart, will and emotions. That's the only individuals that can have the same mind with Christ.

Why am I saying this?

I came across an interesting scripture that birthed this article's title.

Let's see it together!

59] "So it was on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias.
60] His mother answered and said, "No; he shall be called John".
But they said to her, there's no one among your relatives who is called by this name.

Zacharias and Elizabeth was given a child after long years of waiting. Prior to the child's arrival, instructions and a specific name was given by an angel of God. The child however, was born and it was time to name him.

Their neighbors and friends were present for the naming ceremony and suggested they name the child Zacharias, the name of his father.

Upon hearing this, Elizabeth immediately disapproved the name because it wasn't the instruction. She quickly said, "His name is John". But their relatives said there wasn't anyone amongst their relatives who beared that name.

They found it strange that an unfamiliar name was proposed by the wife. Well, the father of every child should give his suggestion as it is with his say they can decide. So, they had to meet Zacharias who was dumb at the time, for the final say and he wrote the same thing—John!(See Luke 1:59-64).

Now, what's my point here?

Many times, we're been forced to follow the norms because we feel "that's how its done". The relatives of Elizabeth and Zacharias wanted to impose something that wasn't meant to be on the child even while it contradicted God's instructions.

Can you simply tell why that occurred?

That's because the relatives didn't hear God. I don't think there was any relationship the relatives had with God as much as Zacharias had with God. The instruction came to a man who was connected to God.

A person who doesn't know Christ and isn't connected to Him will always want to follow "the way it's done" rather than the way "it's supposed to be" because he doesn't have the mind of Christ.

A man who isn't recreated in his spirit will always go contrary to God's pattern and if opportunity or position be given, he'll establish a tradition, norm, or set of rules that will definitely oppose God's patterns.

That's why the world is full of ridiculous traditions and systems.

Please, understand that tradition isn't limited to just tribes and cultures, it's a societal thing. Tradition is simply a commonly held system.

Example of a statement made by someone who is held by traditions and systems is;

"This is the way it is done so we go by it."

"This is how our people do it so we accept is as the standard."

And more often than not, these standards are passed down to generations if not broken by a change in the system by a system much more better than the previous. That's critically what the Word of God does and mearnt to do in our dying society filled with outrageous beliefs and systems.

One thing I've noticed is folks who are so engrossed with their traditions and patterns aren't subject nor open to change and they teach it to the younger generation.

Do you even know that traditions can limit a person?

Scripture has a lot of big things said about those who recieves Jesus and becomes part of the family of Christ but unfortunately, many, even the christians are limited by what society and the world tells them.

God has said and is still saying great things about us; our rights in Christ, our freedom, our inheritance, our possession, etc yet many are still dying when all benefits in Christ are laid bare in God's Word.

"In this native, people don't easily make it. You'll have to pass through a goddess/spirit/ritualist to make it in life."

Question: is it what God's word says?

I've even heard someone say premarital sex is not a sin, so long you maintain one sexual partner.

What nonsense!

And people will still follow it because it's accepted as a norm in the society.

Please child of God, throw all those trash away and have nothing to do with it.

Don't give in to trends and societal norms when they're in opposition to God's standards.

In the story of Elizabeth and Zacharias, the people wanted to impose a different name (their own will) on the child because it was a norm to give familiar names to their children (names that can be related to them) when God wanted something different which looked strange to them.

See, God's instructions will always be strange to the world and its wisdom.

Atleast, they tried giving the name of the baby's father to the baby to respect the man of God else they would have given a name of one of their ancestors or that of another relative.

For the fact something looks good in itself doesn't mean it's accepted by God. And please tell me, whose say matters, man's or God's?

There's a reason Romans 12:2 says we shouldn't be conformed to this world. That's because its ways and wisdom is corrupt and unacceptable to God. And friendship with the world is enmity with God. (James 4:4)

So please, "beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deciet, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. [Colossians 2:8]

All those traditions and superstitious beliefs that has demonism and fetishism written all over it should never be believed or put into consideration.

Even those traditions that are looking okay in itself should be weighed with God's word. If it's not in sync with God's word, then there's no need believing it or living it

God's word remains our standard as His children. His instructions remains our template for living our lives. His Word remains our means of transformation and His wisdom, though foolish to the world, is the best we'll ever find.

Therefore, embrace it!

MY DEADLY FRIEND

I had this friend I never knew was a foe till I understood its deadly traits.   The worst part?? I feed it myself unknowingly. Imagine feeding what kills you slowly. No, it's not an external being or thing but comes from within.  And no, it's not personal to me but a generic problem amongst millions of people out there. Comparison! Yes, comparison! It shows itself through three different forms :  Emotions , c ommunication   and   Identity . You would agree with me that these forms can also be components that constitute friendship. This is to elaborate how comparison poses as a friend while stating its significant harm. THE EMOTIONS INVOLVED  Some people think of comparison as a tool for growth. I mean, if other people's success and progress can keep you awake and thinking all the time, then you would want to do better. That's what you think, right?  Comparison would surely give you a lot of motivational lines like: "If my friend can do this, i can do i...

WHEN PURPOSE DOESN'T LOOK POPULAR

One of the basic need of humans is to be seen. The need to be wanted, accepted and approved by others. And in our world today, where visibility and popularity often connotes value, walking in the light of purpose can feel lonely and somewhat insignificant. It seems like everyone is moving faster, shining brighter, and getting noticed.  On the other hand, you who seek to live in obedience to God's instruction per time  don't draw attention. Your purpose looks slow, hidden, or even strange to others. What happens then? The truth is, God’s purpose for your life won’t always look popular. Sometimes, He calls you to build when no one else understands what you’re building. He calls you to walk a path that doesn’t make sense to the crowd. That's not really comforting, right? But understand that there's a difference between living for purpose and living for popularity. Purpose is about fulfilling God’s assignment for your life. It’s about obedience, faith, and surrender. Wheth...

HOW TO BUILD CONFIDENCE WITHOUT LOSING HUMILITY

You know, I truly love the virtue called humility and sincerely admire humble people. But you see folks that are extremely humble yet unapologetically confident — this, I can never resist. I could't help but wonder how they strike the balance until recently. You can see humility yet confidence is an aura they exude. I had to research on it and I discovered the "how-to" behind this amazing twist which I'll be unfolding here.  First off, let's understand this: T here is a thin line between confidence and pride. It takes some level of mastery to avoid breaking that line.  Have you ever tried to be confident but felt like you were being “too much”? Maybe you spoke up during a meeting, posted your small win online, or walked into a room with your head held high, then immediately wondered if you came off as proud. It’s something many struggle with: wanting to believe in themselves without seeming arrogant. Society often makes it worse by mixing up humility with self-dou...

SOME TOXIC HABITS TO AVOID

You've lived long enough to know that there are things that are good for you and things that are toxic for you. You have a conscience, a brain and mind to sponsor that. In this article, there are a few highlighted habits that are highly toxic for you. But before unveiling it, let me explain the word TOXIC. TOXIC is a word used to describe something that is harmful or damaging. Anything that's toxic is detrimental to you either emotionally, mentally, psychologically or physically. Okay! So, let's get right into it. SOME TOXIC HABITS TO AVOID Self-Criticism Self-criticism is evaluating and judging yourself harshly, thinking you have to be perfect and never make mistakes. It's that negative voice speaking inside of you which magnifies your weaknesses and stirs you to see nothing good about yourself and by so doing, drown you in self criticism. That negative voice only wants you to see YOU as not good enough, a failure, a weak and unskilled person, incapable...i...

HOW POSSIBLE IS PURITY IN A PERVERSE WORLD?

We live in a world where premarital sex, lust, and diverse sexual vices are thrown at us on the face. Sensual pictures, movies and music that promotes and instigates pornography, masturbation, lesbianism, homosexuality, adultery, rape, lust, etc are rampant, virtually everywhere. It takes advance discipline and utmost reverend for God to be able to resist it. When you access the internet, its there. When you read through some magazines, its there. What about the television compiled with various TV channels with different commercials, ads, movies, operas, shows, etc, it is in its abundance.  These days, almost everything we view promotes lust. Even ads; mere ads. Those that value their christian faith and purity can't even watch television in peace. You'll have to keep changing and switching channels to guide your eyes against scenes that defiles the mind. Even the streets are cluttered with immodestly dressed women and men. They are on every sidewalk and every corne...

THE CURRENCY CALLED REPUTATION

"Forget it! I can do anything at all for money". "Being nice and considerate will not put food on my table and take care of my needs". "You need to be wise (that is, to be crafty 😒) to make it in this life."  "Too much "holy holy" will keep you poor". Blah blah blah!  You see people with these mindset?.... They don't last. Let me first counter two dominant mindsets evident in the above statements. First, being nice is never all there is to a good character. Niceness is never enough to afford you a good reputation.  Secondly, reputation is an invisible currency whether you believe it or not. Stay with me... By obvious observation, this is a very impatient generation. The world is rapidly evolving and literally making life faster and easier for us.   There's fast food, fast shopping, fast delivery, even fast dopamine hits from social media. Advancement of technology has made everything easy from the comfort of our homes. Let'...

NAKED BEHIND THE TREES

It didn't take long before they realized what had happened after they had their first bite.  " I'm naked, I don't want anyone especially God to see me like this. He may condemn, criticize or judge me." Those were probably the thoughts of Adam and his wife after they disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit.  Upon realization of their nakedness, their instinct quickly suggested they sew fig leaves together to cover themselves up. And as if that wasn't enough, they hid themselves behind the trees in fear and hunger for security, hoping the trunk of the trees and leaves would give the proper covering they wanted.  "...and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden." (Genesis 3:8). In that state of guilt, many are like Adam and Eve. They hide behind trees as a result of their nakedness well known to them. Now, let's look at the significance of NAKEDNESS and TREES . NAKEDNESS in th...

SHUT THAT WINDOW

There are reasons the windows of your house is meant to be shut, even if not completely. There should be limited access into the house. It helps prevent unwanted things from creeping into the house. In as much as the window was created to allow the reflection of the brightness of the day into the house and for ventilation, it must be closed to an extent, to avoid insects and unwanted substances intruding the house. In this context however, the windows that needs to be shut are the windows that leads to your heart. Your heart (physically and spiritually) are as important as the air you breathe, because the heart is the seat of core activities that keeps you alive and also moulds your life. Physically, your heart is the muscle at the centre of your circulation system. It pumps blood around your body as your heart beats. This blood sends oxygen and nutrients to all parts of your body, and carries away unwanted carbon dioxide and waste products. Literally speaking, you can'...

WHOSE OPINION DO YOU FOLLOW?

There are many individuals who are easily swayed by the opinion of others. These individuals under such category set the opinion of others as a yardstick for making decisions and moulden their judgements about things in their lives.  If you are an individual that is easily moved by what others think, say or perceive as a standard for something, then you're likely to make certain mistakes in life. You'll either go against yourself, convictions, or principles or you go against that of Christ (as a Christian). We are meant to hold strong the precepts and principles of God's word. We are supposed to be mindful of what Christ thinks and what's best and right not what others think. When people air their views, stance or perception about something or about you, it shouldn't formulate wrong thoughts about yourself or the situation.   Just because someone, probably a friend, relative or someone close to you says something not pleasant about you, you then feel dej...
